In a move set to redefine resource and energy engineering education, Kelcy Warren has made the largest philanthropic contribution in the history of The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). The $12 million donation by Warren, a distinguished alumnus and executive chairman of Energy Transfer LP, is poised to elevate the university’s stature in the burgeoning field of resource and energy engineering (REE).
This substantial investment will bolster UTA’s College of Engineering by funding the newly introduced REE bachelor’s program. The program is scheduled to commence in fall 2023, marking the first of its kind in the United States. Warren’s gift will facilitate the recruitment of top-tier faculty through the creation of the Kelcy Warren Endowed Professorship and two Kelcy Warren Endowed Faculty Fellowships, ensuring an enriching educational experience for students.
Warren, who graduated from UTA in 1978 with a degree in civil engineering, expressed his commitment to nurturing future leaders in the energy sector. Kelcy Warren’s donation underscores a pressing state need for adept graduates who can adeptly manage energy resources.
Notably, the contribution will also establish the Kelcy Warren Career Experience Center, providing vital experiential learning opportunities, such as internships and co-ops, for engineering undergraduates. In addition, Kelcy Warren Scholars and Warren Fellows programs will offer substantial scholarships and fellowships, easing the financial burden for students pursuing careers in the energy industry.
The new program will integrate courses on both conventional and renewable energy sources within UTA’s Electrical Engineering Department. In doing so, it aims to produce graduates who are proficient in both engineering and business aspects of the energy industry.
