How Nathaniel Ru is Changing Fast Food

Sweetgreen is one of the most prominent high end healthy fast food restaurants in the northeast. Based out of Georgetown, the company has been a fast riser over the past decade as they’ve sought to provide locals with healthy salads that provide flavor and value into a healthy package.

The company was founded by Nathaniel Ru and two fellow classmates and their unusual approach to business has been what has fueled the success of the company over the years.

Nathaniel Ru was just a student in college when he put his head together with Jonathan Neman and Nicolas Jammet. They were all first generation immigrants who were taking an entrepreneurship class at the same place, Georgetown University.

While at school the trio decided to brainstorm a concept that would not only fulfill them personally, healthy food is something they feel strong about, but also be something they could monetize. After planning out they eventually settled on Sweetgreen.

Sweetgreen wouldn’t be a concept that sat idle for awhile and instead it would find its way straight to market. Ru and his fellow co-founders would have their first restaurant open near Georgetown within a year after graduating. Nathaniel Ru knows that succeeding as a restaurant and succeeding with integrity as a restaurant chain are two entirely different propositions.

Ru has never believed in corporate culture and he in fact shuts down their corporate headquarters, now based in Los Angeles, several times per year in order to send everybody for hands on work int he actual Sweetgreen restaurants. Ru doesn’t want to become the next McDonalds or Burger King — at least the salad version, he wants to become a special part of every community that he sets up shop in.

As a leader for the Sweetgreen company it is important to Nathaniel Ru to always be looking to the future and learning from the past.Ru says that, looking back, he wishes he could go back in time and make himself read more books and study harder.

Ru’s success has been all about learning on the go. Ru says that he looks up to several big companies but that he has particularly taken a shine to the CEO of Under Armour, Kevin Plank. Ru says of Plank, “It’s a company that stands for something bigger than itself.” That, in a nutshell, is the Sweetgreen mission.
